What is Soft Washing?

They developed soft washing as a safe strategy for eliminating unsightly black stains from shingle roofs. An alga called Gloeocapsa Magma feeds on asphalt shingles and can cause discoloration and reduce roof lifespan.

When you blast roofs with high pressure to remove algae, this can cause destruction that looks like a hailstorm, resulting in the removal of the aggregate layer. The aggerate layer is to protect shingles from weathering and UV exposure. A more viable solution would use sodium hypochlorite, or bleach, as a chemical compound designed to kill organic matter. This process, we call soft washing, combines a low-pressure spray of water and a mix of our chemicals to clean roofs, siding, and other surfaces. Roof manufacturers suggest the use of soft washing. The most efficient method for roof sanitization is this method. Some insurance companies require homeowners to use this approach to keep their coverage.

Soft washing is gaining attention as the preferred method of cleaning and removing organic-based stains from various surfaces, such as roofs, siding, wood fences, and any delicate surface susceptible to damage from high-pressure techniques. Devised as a safe and effective way to clean roofs, soft washing has become the go-to solution for many exterior cleaning tasks.

Soft washing is not only effective against Gloeocapsa Magma (algae). It can also eradicate mold, mildew, lichen, moss, fungi, and germs.

What equipment do you need for Soft Washing?

As soft washing’s popularity has increased, so has the demand for more advanced technology. Previously, most contractors would use low-cost, 12-volt sprayers. These are not well-suited to handle potent chemicals and have limited reach with soft washing liquids. The outcome was that contractors had to climb onto roofs and mix solutions differently. More concentrated solutions could damage the plants or cause over-spray.

Ultimately, deciding which soft washing system is best will depend on the cleaning you need to complete, your desired efficiency levels, and your budget.
